Corinthian Hall

I don’t usually write about sad things but today I am sad that a little piece of Melrose's history may be lost.

Corinthian Hall at 523 Franklin St has been sold and a 5-story mixed-use project is under review. The proposed development is for 34 residential units, the existing restaurant and salon will remain.

The colonial-style building is over a century old, built in 1896. The second floor holds a remarkable space. The Hall has an ornately decorated tin ceiling and walls, stunning windows, and ornate wood-carved features.

During its glory years, the vibrant facility has been home to musical performances, dances, weddings, a tearoom, and a function hall, currently, it houses the Dance Gallery.

The elegant stage is a 15-foot semi-circle with magnificent molding over the arch including theater masks in the corners.

When you enter you can sense the history and elegance. In the 1900’s it was called the “daintiest hall” north of Boston.

This hidden jewel was home to the Melrose Highlands Woman’s Club where members would gather to sew uniforms for World War II soldiers.

I am sad to see this noteworthy beauty lost but hope the memory of this culturally significant space will live on.
