Miter Biter Frame Company
Written and Photographed by Nancy Clover

What do you call a business that starts as a hobby in your garage then grows into a successful enterprise over the next 5 decades? The answer is Miter Biter Frame Company!!
A staple among the businesses on Main St in Melrose – Miter Biter has been offering custom framing, printing, works of art, greeting cards, mirrors, and unique gifts. The family-owned business will celebrate 50 years in September!
I was lucky enough to score a beautiful free painting from the little gallery on Albion Street run by Jennifer Blesso. I brought the miniature work of art to Miter Biter, Amanda listened to what I was looking for and immediately showed me options that would make the painting a center piece. Her artistic eyes and the way her mind worked were fascinating – I love the outcome!
The frames in the store are created in house – many using the famous “miter biter” – a foot-operated machine that cuts or bites into wood to create a 45 degree angle for the frame.

The store is owned by two generations of Halligans – Jim, Dan, and Faith. Amanda Norden has worked there so long she is considered family! Jim was born in Melrose and is a former Chemistry teacher.
Success after 50 years (48 of these were in Melrose) in a specialty business relies on exceptional customer service, knowledgeable staff, understanding the customer’s needs, great communications, and superior work. Miter Biter hits all these qualities!
I asked for tips on hanging frames – don’t use command strips – they won’t last.
They have a reward program you can use on additional framing.
I love patronizing businesses that give back to the community. The Halligans contribute to many local charities. If there are fundraising tickets to be sold – you can buy them at the shop.
The windows at the corner store on Main Street act as a mini art gallery with ever changing images – always whimsical. I love to glimpse at what is on display – rumor has it they will be a new exhibit to coincide with the Oscars.
Now is a great time to brighten up your home by framing a piece you have been meaning to get done. The professionals at Miter Biter are here to help!
