Melrose in Bloom: The Power of Volunteers and the Adopt-a-Site Program

Across Melrose, “Adopt-a-Site” locations are quietly transforming our city — one flower bed, traffic island, and playground at a time. Under the direction of the Melrose Parks Department, this volunteer-driven program brings beauty, color, and care to our shared public spaces.

You’ll find these adopted spots in every corner of the community — from busy traffic islands and park entrances to playgrounds, parking lots, and the landscaped areas in front of public buildings.

The idea is simple but powerful: residents, businesses, and community groups “adopt” a public site and commit to maintaining it throughout the growing season. Volunteers handle everything from planting flowers and shrubs to weeding, pruning, mulching, picking up litter, and watering — turning everyday spaces into pockets of pride.

Beyond beautification, the program strengthens community bonds. It’s neighbors working side by side, creating something lasting for everyone to enjoy. Each adopted site becomes a reflection of the care and spirit that defines Melrose.

Supported by the Parks Department, the Adopt-a-Site Program is an open invitation to get your hands dirty, meet fellow residents, and make a visible difference right where you live. Together, we’re proving that small acts of stewardship can help a city truly bloom.
