Receiving an award at the Massachusetts State House is no small feat — it’s a recognition of dedication, impact, and the power of change. And this year, Melrose’s own Maureen Buzby was honored for her tireless work on the Nicotine Free Generation initiative.

Think back — do you remember when smoking in restaurants, offices, or even on airplanes was the norm? Hard to imagine now, right? Thanks to public health efforts, the landscape has changed dramatically. But the fight isn’t over. The Nicotine Free Generation initiative takes things a step further, ensuring that the next generation never starts smoking in the first place.

Nicotine is one of the most dangerously addictive substances, and tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., costing billions in smoking-related illnesses. The best solution? Prevention. Maureen has been a champion of this cause, working diligently to stop another generation from falling into nicotine addiction.

As the Tobacco Inspection Coordinator for the Melrose Health and Human Services Department, Maureen plays a critical role in protecting public health. She inspects local retailers that sell tobacco, educates both store owners and the community on regulations, and ensures businesses aren’t illegally selling to minors.

Her work has directly contributed to six regions in the Mystic Valley adopting the Nicotine Free Generation initiative, a groundbreaking policy that prohibits anyone born after Jan 1, 2004 from purchasing nicotine products—with the exception of FDA-approved cessation aids like nicotine patches and gum. This forward-thinking approach aims to stop addiction before it starts.

Maureen also educates the public on lesser-known nicotine dangers. Did you know that vaping devices can release metal fragments from lithium batteries, which can be inhaled? Or that synthetic nicotine salts and oral nicotine pouches pose serious health risks? Many don’t—but thanks to Maureen’s outreach, more people are becoming aware of the hazards associated with these products.

Through her leadership, advocacy, and hands-on work in the community, Maureen Buzby has made a lasting impact on public health in Melrose and beyond. Her recognition at the State House is not just an award — it’s a testament to her commitment to a healthier future for all.
