Anne DeSouza-Ward is a civic powerhouse in Melrose.

I don’t always agree with the Melrose Planning Board, but you’ve got to respect them—they dive into thoughtful discussions and patiently listen to citizens (even the passionate ones!). And when it comes to civic leadership, Anne DeSouza-Ward stands out as one of the best.

Anne is known for her unwavering commitment to the community. She serves as the Clerk and Chair of the Zoning Subcommittee for the Planning Board, a vital group that ensures Melrose grows responsibly, follows the law, and preserves its charm. Whether reviewing site plans or special permits, Anne plays a crucial role in maintaining the city’s architectural integrity, vibrant commercial landscape, and welcoming neighborhoods.

With her background as a retired lawyer, Anne brings expertise, a sharp mind, and a deep sense of fairness to the board. Her experience also extends to the Melrose Master Plan Committee, where she helped create a blueprint for the city’s long-term growth and vision.

Beyond urban planning, Anne is a tireless advocate for democracy. She serves as President of the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Melrose, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to educating voters and promoting civic engagement. Under her leadership, the Melrose chapter continues its vital work—hosting candidate forums, registering voters, and ensuring residents stay informed and empowered.

The League of Women Voters has deep roots in Melrose, having played a key role in founding the Human Rights Commission, the Melrose Alliance Against Violence (MAAV), and the MLK Day of Community Service—initiatives that reflect their dedication to justice, safety, and unity.

Anne is passionate about what makes Melrose special. She adores its tight-knit community, thriving arts and music scene, rich interfaith connections, and of course, the incredible public library. She also believes Melrose’s abundance of parks and green spaces is something truly unique—providing a much-needed balance between city life and nature.

Even with all she’s accomplished, Anne isn’t slowing down. Her bucket list includes: Learning more languages (she already speaks Portuguese!) and traveling to Africa, South America, and the Pacific Northwest.

Through her leadership, advocacy, and deep love for her city, Anne DeSouza-Ward continues to shape Melrose for the better. Whether she’s ensuring smart urban development, encouraging voter participation, or planning her next adventure, one thing is clear—Melrose is lucky to have her.
