The Fitch Home
Written and Photographed by Nancy Clover

The Fitch Home is just that: a home.
This private, non-profit retirement and senior living community is located at 75 Lake Avenue in Melrose. When Sarah Fitch passed away in 1918, she left her home at 20 Lake Ave and an endowment to establish and maintain her home for elderly residents. By 1920, there was a waiting list, therefore a larger home was purchased at 75 Lake Ave.
This magnificent house is home to 20 residents. It offers a range of living options, including independent senior living, assisted care, and short-term stays.
The facility prides itself on a home-like atmosphere. Each of the unique rooms has a private bath and residents are encouraged to bring their own furnishings. The dwelling can also accommodate couples.
The inviting space includes on-site nursing staff, and a variety of amenities designed to make residents feel at home. Parking is available if they want their car. Residents can enjoy beautiful views of Ell Pond, and daily exercise including an exercise room, curated activities, entertainment, high-quality meals, and comfortable private units equipped with individual temperature control and cable/internet access. The bed-and-breakfast-style community incorporates medication assistance, laundry and housekeeping as well.

Intergenerational music class
The tranquil house is set up with minimum restrictions and maximum of comfort and a warm, friendly atmosphere. There is ample space for social opportunities and lots of spots for private time.
Maria Haggerty started working at the Fitch Home in the kitchen when she was 14. In college she worked as a nurse’s aide. In 2018 she returned to become the Assistant Executive Director, and stepped into the role of Executive Director in 2020. Her love for the facility is palpable. She believes the residents can feel how the staff love their jobs.
There was a recent celebration of a resident’s 106th birthday!!! While I was at the home for a short visit there was a multigenerational music class, a religious service, a puzzle, and lunch was being prepared. The walls are covered in history and art, there is a beautiful view of Ell Pond and the grounds from almost every window.
On the first Sunday in May (May 4th), the Fitch Home opens it doors to the community for an afternoon tea and open house.
I think Sarah Fitch would be very proud of her legacy!
