Fear of the dentist is real — and you are not alone. Studies show that nearly 3 out of 4 adults experience dental anxiety. That’s a LOT of white knuckling in waiting rooms.

I loved my longtime dentist in Lawrence, but when he retired, it was time to move my dental care to Melrose — not just inconvenient — it’s emotional! ... and the anxiety set in.

Thankfully, I was referred to Melrose Dental Group on Porter Street, across from Melrose Wakefield Hospital — and from the moment I called, I felt at ease.

Let’s be honest: the receptionist sets the tone. If the front desk feels chaotic, the anxiety skyrockets. Kelly handled multiple appointment changes (while I was juggling family issues in Florida!) with grace, humor, and zero stress energy. When I finally met her in person, she greeted me warmly — and she’s basically an insurance wizard.

Then comes Dr. Piro Leno — and this is where modern dentistry shines. Instead of the old “tray of goo shoved in your mouth” impression (we all know that gag reflex moment), he uses advanced 3-D imaging technology to create a precise digital model for my implant crown. Faster. Cleaner. Way more comfortable.

He patiently explained my options and truly lives his philosophy of treating patients with compassion and professionalism while educating them to make informed decisions.

Then came the cleaning — my least favorite part. Enter Flora, my new best friend. She used a gentle water technology to remove buildup (far less scraping than I expected!) and even offered a painless laser deep gum cleaning ($40, not covered by insurance). She explained everything clearly and shared helpful tips without judgment.

If you’ve been avoiding the dentist because of fear, you’re not alone. But the right team makes all the difference. Melrose Dental Group might just change your mind.
