New Door Installation at the Melrose YMCA

Our beloved Melrose YMCA is getting a little love — and an important upgrade.

Soon, an electric entry door will be installed to comply with ADA regulations, making it easier and more welcoming for everyone to access this incredible community resource.

Located at 497 Main Street, this historic three-story brick building was dedicated on April 1, 1895. By 1911, with a membership of 1,108, the Melrose Young Men’s Christian Association was declared the largest in the country for a city of comparable size — a remarkable testament to how deeply the Y has always been woven into the fabric of Melrose.

Today, the YMCA continues that legacy by serving adults, youth, and families alike. The building houses a child care center, gymnasium, swimming pool, exercise and weight rooms, and offers a wide range of programs. These include LIVESTRONG, supporting individuals diagnosed with or recovering from cancer, more than 40 group exercise classes each week, and personal training for all fitness levels.

The Melrose YMCA is far more than a building or a place to work out—it is a cornerstone of health, inclusion, and connection in our city. It supports physical wellness, emotional resilience, and community belonging across generations. Improvements like this remind us that the Y continues to evolve while staying true to its mission: ensuring that everyone in Melrose has a place to grow stronger, together.

If your New Year’s resolution includes more exercise and a sense of community, you don’t have to look farer than the YMCA!
