Who doesn’t love free art? Jennifer "Jen" Blesso is the creative force behind Melrose’s Free Little Art Gallery!

During the pandemic, the Melrose Open Studio Tour (MOST) introduced "mini art galleries" in kiosks around the city to showcase local artists’ work. Inspired by this initiative and driven by her passion for community engagement, Jen launched the Free for All Little Art Gallery — a charming, miniature gallery where artists can leave a piece of art and take one in return.

While many contributors are local, Jen has also received artwork from across the country, including collaborations with artists from Seattle and Baltimore. To date, she estimates she has given away over 100 pieces of art, ranging from paintings and sketches to origami and painted rocks. She regularly highlights new additions on Instagram, keeping the gallery fresh and engaging.

Located at 22 Albion Street, this delightful initiative champions creativity and accessibility in the arts.

When I first arrived in Melrose, I heard about the Free Little Art Gallery and discovered a beautiful watercolor that I framed and now cherish in my home. What a wonderful concept!

A talented mixed-media artist, Jen is known for her vibrant and joyful creations. Lately, she’s been exploring the creative possibilities of collage, embroidery, and weaving.

Her involvement with Follow Your Art (FYA) dates back to its inception. She started as a student and later took on roles as a facilitator and administrator. She served as the Arts for All Coordinator for three years and now holds the position of Secretary on the Board. Additionally, as an Artist-in-Residence, she has a dedicated studio at the Big Yellow House, where she treasures the monthly potluck — a gathering where artists come together to share food, ideas, and feedback.

Jen loves Melrose’s family-friendly atmosphere, which is ideal for her 16-year-old twins, as well as the town’s vibrant sense of community. Though small in size, Melrose is rich in activities, ensuring there’s always something to do.

Jen’s bucket list includes taking a storytelling class at FYA, participating in more art shows, and returning to teaching art to young children. Having once lived in Russia, she hopes to continue traveling and discovering new artistic inspirations around the world.

A passionate advocate for the Melrose arts scene, Jen actively supports the Creative Alliance and the Melrose Arts Festival (April 26 & 27 at Memorial Hall), believing these cultural contributions enrich the community’s fabric.

Through her artistic vision and unwavering dedication to community engagement, Jen has become a cornerstone of Melrose’s cultural landscape, inspiring both emerging and established artists alike.
