Maribeth Darwin is widely recognized for her deep-rooted commitment to fostering kindness and connection, most notably through her leadership in the PTO and the Melrose Kind initiative.

In 2016, Maribeth and co-founder Stephanie Nelson created a city-wide holiday — Random Acts of Kindness Day (November 20th) — inspired by a troubling incident at the Middle School, where students were targeting red-haired classmates due to a reference in a South Park episode. Determined to turn a negative event into a force for good, they spearheaded this celebration.

Supported by schools, businesses, and the broader community, this initiative has evolved beyond a single day; through the Melrose Kind social media platforms, it has expanded into a year-round effort, collecting donations for various charitable organizations each month. Maribeth recently stepped down from a leadership position but continues to be involved.

Beyond her work with Melrose Kind, Maribeth has played a pivotal role in fostering community dialogue. She organized Community Conversations Dinners at The Kitchen, bringing together over 150 people across five events to discuss important issues and listen to diverse perspectives.

As the former PTO President at Melrose High School, she strengthened relationships between parents, students, and staff. Understanding that the transition to high school can be overwhelming, she developed Frequently Asked Questions guides to demystify the experience, covering topics such as standardized testing and college preparation.

With a background in web development, Maribeth has also contributed her skills to the Melrose Education Foundation, Melrose Grad Night, and multiple PTOs, creating websites that enhance communication and accessibility for local organizations.

In addition to her community work, Maribeth is an accomplished writer and personal essayist. Her work has been published in notable literary outlets, including BrainChild, BrainTeen Magazine, and Grown and Flown. She is currently working on a memoir that intertwines the challenges of raising young children with her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s. Her writing can be found on her Facebook page.

What Maribeth loves most about Melrose is its walkability, strong sense of community, and vibrant downtown filled with restaurants and businesses. She appreciates that Melrose is a place where people truly know and support one another, spanning generations from young families to longtime residents.

Looking ahead, her goals include publishing her memoir and, above all, leading by example for her children — teaching them to be kind, happy, and good people.

Maribeth Darwin’s impact on Melrose is both profound and far-reaching. Through her leadership in kindness initiatives, community-building efforts, and advocacy for parents and students, she has created lasting change. Whether organizing city-wide events, fostering important conversations, or amplifying voices through her writing, Maribeth embodies the values of compassion, connection, and dedication that make Melrose a special place to call home.
